May Day 2003

Riots in London 2003. There is, traditionally, a Trades Unions march on May Day in London, but the march had also become a focus for anti-capitalist protest, and, in this year, anti-war protesters.

For much of the day, a carnival atmosphere prevailed and both the demonstrators and the police were relaxed and good natured. Towards evening, however, police tactics got more aggressive as they broke up the demonstrations.

The quality of these images is variable as they were scanned some time ago (some from negs others from prints) on low res equipment.
